What is Ministry?

Haleakala Silversword Flowers

Ministry is like a flower, in that just as there are more kinds of flowers than I can count, so there are more kinds of ministry than I can count. Each flower has its own kind of beauty. Some kinds are rare, like the Haleakala Silversword flowers shown above, and some are common. The Holy Bible describes some kinds of ministry in various places, but they all have one thing in common: service. All ministry consists of serving God, usually by serving people. It may be preaching the Word of God, or it may be providing for physical needs. It may be as a missionary, serving people of another language and culture, or it may be local. It may be “traditional” ministry, or it may be serving as an aviation mechanic supporting transportation needs of Bible translators in Papua New Guinea or some similar place. Whatever it is, it is about serving God more than it is about titles, pay, or the visible trappings we associate with ministers. It may be a vocation or just something we do in addition to our “regular” work.

Every believer in Jesus Christ is called to some sort of ministry. Whatever it is, you will know it when the time is right. As Jesus said, “My sheep know my voice.” (See John 10.)
